Dr Emily Worthington

Research Fellow
Emily is in much demand as a professional clarinettist specialising in period instruments from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. She is regularly invited to perform as a guest principal with leading ensembles around the world, including the Academy of Ancient Music, Gabrieli Consort and Players, Concerto Copenhagen, Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra and Spira Mirabilis. Emily also leads Boxwood & Brass, a Harmonie specialising in performing Classical and Early-Romantic wind repertoire on period instruments. Boxwood & Brass's recordings for Resonus Classics have been called 'dazzlingly persuasive' (BBC Music Magazine), 'button-bright' (Gramophone), 'revelatory' (Early Music Today) and 'joyous listening' (The Artsdesk).

Daniel Grimwood

Research Associate
Daniel Grimwood is celebrated as a leading interpreter of 19th-century virtuoso piano works, particularly renowned for his groundbreaking performances and recordings of Adolph von Henselt's music, notably hailed by Gramophone Magazine as an "instant classic." His repertoire spans from Bach to Still Alive, and he has performed in prestigious venues worldwide. As a founding member of Tier3 Piano Trio, he enjoys a vibrant career in both solo and chamber music, marked by innovative programming. Alongside performing, Grimwood is a Research Associate at the University of York, focusing on 19th-century Performance Practice further expanding his fascination with the Romantic era, and has authored acclaimed works on Henselt's Etudes. Beyond music, Grimwood is an avid distance runner and member of the Paddock Wood Athletic Club.

Dr Andrea Schiavo

Project Mentor
Andrea received his PhD in Music from the University of Sheffield (2014), studying musical skill acquisition and development through the lens of embodied cognitive science. After his doctoral studies, he continued this research as postdoctoral fellow in the USA (School of Music, Ohio State University), Turkey (Department of Psychology, Bosphorus University), and Austria (Institute for Music Education, University of Music and Performing Arts Graz) gaining relevant interdisciplinary experience. From 2017 to 2022, he was based at the Centre of Systematic Musicology of the University of Graz, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Prof Neal Peres da Costa

Project Mentor
Neal Peres Da Costa is a world-renowned performing scholar, researcher and educator. He has held academic posts at the University of NSW, University of Leeds, Trinity College of Music (London), and Royal Academy of Music (London). He is Professor of Historical Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he founded the Historical Performance division in 2007, and was the division's chair for eight years. Subsequently, he was Program Leader of Postgraduate Research. Currently, he is Associate Dean (Research).

Luke Sullivan

Web Developer
Luke recently graduated from the University of York with a degree in Electronic Engineering with Music Technology Systems in January 2024. Work undertaken during his time at York has included the development of an iOS music-making app, a weather-reading device for people with disabilities, and a web-based musical instrument operated with Nintendo Nunchucks for his bachelor's project. He is aiming to continue exploring music technology after graduation and branch out into VST plugin development.
